On a 5-4 vote Phoenix Mayor and some on the council voted for a "moment of silence", effectively banning all prayer at council meetings. The vote gave in to the demands of the satanist group from Tucson who's main objective was to ban all prayer at public meetings.
"DiCiccio appears to be correct, since the Satanic Temple has stated that its entire reason for fighting for the invocation was to end the practice by demonstrating that it is a flagrant breach of the separation of church and state." Phoenix New Times. (February 4, 2016)
I had predicted last week the Mayor/Council were secretly heading in this direction. Unfortunately, that prediction was correct.
The last minute motion to ban prayer was supported by Mayor Greg Stanton and council members Kate Gallego, Laura Pastor, Danny Valenzuela and Thelda Williams. The motion caught many in the public by surprise and purposely created confusion with the public.
Council members who supported keeping prayer were Michael Nowakowski, Bill Gates, Jim Waring and myself.
We still have hope!!!!
Councilmen Michael Nowakowski, Jim Waring and myself have asked for a vote to send the long held tradition of prayer to the ballot. A measure to be voted on at the next scheduled election.
If the Mayor/Council block this move, there is a planned effort to collect signatures for a ballot measure. Approximately 26,000 signatures would be needed by the end of the year.
