A Message From The President

Last Saturday I was surrounded by the happiest people in the world. Five-year-old polio patients, legless landmine victims, amputees, and those with other infirmities shuffled on crutches or were carried by family members into the courtyard. Although most were from the poorest of backgrounds, on this day they all wore their best clothes and held their heads high.

This was the day that their life would be changed.

They were about to receive their first wheelchair.

The line outside the art museum in San Salvador stretched around the block – the queue lengthening after each diesel-belching bus unloaded. Inside the museum’s courtyard, more than 280 gleaming red wheelchairs were unpacked, awaiting new owners. A local Rotarian called each name from a clipboard into the megaphone causing a chain reaction among fellow workers to assist the recipient up a steep ramp to the official wheelchair distribution area.

After brief introductions in fragmented Spanglish, NuView IRA volunteers, together with Rotary Club members, gently lowered our new friends into their gift of mobility. The emotions in that moment seemed to erase the challenge of language as tears of gladness and appreciation led to smiles and hugs.

Five-year-old Maria said she heard that you can dance once finally in a wheelchair, which she then proceeded to happily try. Edwin, an eight-year-old with legs that will never be able to carry him, exclaimed he wants to be a soldier now that he has his chair. Antonio, a man at the young age of 101, received his first chair alongside his wife, Maria, a feisty 79-year-old, and he plans to live a much more active life back in his village. Hundreds of other stories have been stitched together in the fabric of our minds after participating in this distribution last week in El Salvador.

NuView employees surround Maria in her new wheelchair outside the art museum in San Salvador with Mandi Howell at bottom left, Glen Mather at top left, and Abby Othen at top right

Thanks to many of our friends, colleagues and clients, and to all of those that participated in the 2013 Hero Games to raise money for the Wheelchair Foundation, hundreds of lives have been changed forever. It is said that one is far more blessed to give than to receive, and this past week was an awesome reminder of the power of sharing just a small portion of that which we so frequently take for granted.

Stay tuned for our second annual Hero Games event coming next spring so that you may be part of the next chapter in this wonderful adventure.

God Bless,

Glen

Bruce Silverman: An Expert Voice

Bruce Silverman says all investors, regardless of what they are investing in, are looking for the same things. It doesn't matter if you're young, in your 40s or already retired. It does not matter where in the country you live or what you do, married or single, whether your children are still young, in college, or already out of the house. Regardless of all variables, the ONLY factors that anyone needs to think about when investing, and in exactly this order, are:

  1. Degree of Safety
  2. Rate of Return (R.O.I.)
  3. Does it "Cash Flow" (for retired folks)

Bruce will be expanding on these topics and sharing one of the best kept secrets in real estate investing today in a webinar later this month. Bruce, a trust deed manager at Home Path Financial with 25 years of real estate and lending experience, will explain a truly "passive" real estate investment strategy that can satisfy all three investment factors - safety, ROI and cash flow - all while growing tax-free inside a self-directed IRA. With real estate long considered one of the best investments, and with market values at 6-year lows, now is the time to learn more about this very lucrative market.

Tune-in to learn more about Bruce’s real estate plan as he hosts a guest webinar August 13 from 1 to 2 pm EST. Register here

Three Simple Ways to Worry Less About Retirement

The Employee Benefit Research Institute’s 2013 Retirement Confidence Survey broke down the percentages of American confidence in being able to afford a comfortable retirement. While more than half of Americans express some level of confidence in their ability to afford a comfortable retirement, (13% are very confident and 38% are somewhat confident), 21% are not too confident, and 28% are not at all confident. In addition, the percentage of those “not at all confident” is at the highest level it has ever been in the 23 years this survey has been administered.

Despite a brighter economic outlook this year than last, experts believe that one of the main reasons retirement confidence remains low is that people are beginning to realize just how much they need to save for their retirement. While it’s best to start saving for retirement as early as possible, what about those who reach their 40s before they start saving? Here are a few simple things you can do to make saving for retirement a little easier...Read more

Success Story Spotlight

This month’s spotlight is shining on an accountant who prefers to retain some level of anonymity by requesting we use only his initials, T.H. After graduating from Boise State University, TH entered the workforce in manufacturing. He went on to later own his own travel agency, but sold it before he lost too much profit to the Internet. Here, we ask him to detail some of his investment success.

NV: How did you learn about self-directed IRAs? What made you want to self-direct?
TH: I learned about self-directed IRAs though my Maryland stockbroker. I was curious about holding real estate within my retirement account, but my stockbroker said I couldn’t unless I went through a self-directed IRA.

NuView: Did you take any introductory courses or advanced classes to enhance your knowledge in self-directed IRAs?

TH: I took NuView’s course Introduction to Self-Directed IRAs, and I learned quite a few things there.

NV: What is your favorite aspect of self-directing your retirement account?

TH: I love having control, having control means that fate is solely in my hands.

NuView: What precautions did you take in order to be successful in your investment?

TH: I guess it’s making sure there is a good long-term renter on the property or that the property is easily rented.

NV: What is your investment philosophy?

TH: My investment philosophy doesn't get any simpler than just buy and hold.
